The Greenways Code

We hope you will enjoy exploring the Greenways routes – here are just a few pointers to make sure you have a great time on your visit:
  • Stay alert – the Greenway routes are shared by horse riders, walkers and cyclists.
  • Cyclists should take care when approaching horses from all directions and always warn riders and carriage drivers of their approach.
  • Download and read the Code of Conduct for Horse Riders and Cyclists before you set off.
  • Keep to the marked path and show consideration to others – remember, cyclists must give way to horse riders and walkers on bridleways.
  • Leave gates and property as you find them.
  • Keep dogs under control at all times, especially near cyclists, horses and other animals.
  • Don’t leave any litter or do any damage.
  • Remember that all off-road tracks are in working forests.
  • Girl on horse
  • Cyclists in the forest
  • Carriage driving along the Greenways route
  • Dog walking in the forest
  • Two horse riders

And Always Plan Ahead

  • Plan your journey using an OS map.
  • Follow the waymarkers that are provided on the off-road part of the Greenway.
  • Download a map of the route from our Maps page.
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
  • Carry a mobile phone with you but remember that you may not get a signal in some areas.
  • Occasionally, the Forestry Commission may run special events which will restrict access to the Greenways. Please check the Forestry Commission website for further details before you set off.

Parking

There are several Pay and Display car parks in the Forest of Dean district, but visitors with horse boxes and trailers should check the BHS EMAGIN® website for information about nearby equestrian centres and farms, etc. which may be used, by prior arrangement, for parking larger vehicles.
